Atlanta planning staff recommend allowing a flashing, changing sign at 580 Atlanta Student Movement Boulevard SW—an exception to district rules that prohibit animated displays and limit qualifying freestanding signs to 48 square feet. The proposed 60-square-foot maximum is 25% larger.[1]
The amended ordinance, sponsored by Councilmember Jason Dozier, would allow one double-sided sign. A light sensor would automatically adjust its brightness to ambient conditions, and the staff report specifies a light limit of 0.3 foot-candles.[1][2]
The November 5 staff memo recommends approval on one condition: the signage must follow Exhibit A, stamped received by the Office of Zoning and Development on September 16, 2026.[1]
Staff describe the site as a place of assembly and say the waiver would provide appropriately scaled signage while avoiding undue distractions to motorists, pedestrians and nearby residents. The report says neither the property's use nor its boundaries would change.[1]
We previously reported the scheduled Nov. 5 zoning review. The agenda lists the request as Z-26-60 for the Zoning Review Board's 6 p.m. meeting in the second-floor City Council Chambers. Staff's endorsement is a recommendation, not final permission to erect the sign; the records reviewed do not establish a board decision or final adoption.[1][3]
