Local brief
Zoning board recommends a flashing-sign exception on Atlanta Student Movement Boulevard
The proposed 60-square-foot sign at No. 580 gets conditional backing—not final permission. Its maximum size would be 25% above the district’s usual limit.
Atlanta’s Zoning Review Board recommended conditional approval Nov. 5 for an animated, flashing and changing sign of up to 60 square feet at 580 Atlanta Student Movement Boulevard SW.[1]
The board’s backing is a step beyond the staff recommendation we previously reported. The marked agenda for case Z-26-60 also records NPU T’s recommendation of approval. These are recommendations: the records reviewed do not establish final adoption or permission to erect the sign.[1][2]
The waiver would make two exceptions to the district rules described in the city’s staff report: those rules prohibit animated, flashing or changing signs and cap qualifying freestanding signs at 48 square feet. The proposed 60-square-foot maximum is 25% larger.[1][2]
The staff report describes a freestanding sign equipped with a light sensor that automatically adjusts brightness to ambient conditions. It specifies a light limit of 0.3 foot-candles.[2]
Staff recommended requiring the signage to follow Exhibit A, stamped received by the Office of Zoning and Development on Sept. 16, 2026. The board’s marked agenda does not spell out its conditions, so it does not establish whether the board adopted that exact requirement.[1][2]
