Local brief
Aldermen approve $567,000 hangar grant bid for a $1.28 million plan
The proposed financing lists another $645,195 as “Additional Funding.” Airport staff says it will seek more state grants.
Starkville aldermen approved seeking a $567,000 federal grant for Corporate Hangar No. 3 at George M. Bryan Field on Oct. 20. But the airport’s preliminary estimate puts the project at $1,275,195—so permission to pursue the grant does not settle the full financing.[1][2][3][4]
The board acted through its vote approving the official agenda, which expressly included consented items. The hangar application was among those items and was read into the meeting record after the motion passed.[1][2][3][5]
As we explained in our earlier account of the hangar’s funding gap, the federal request would cover less than half the preliminary price. The estimate lists $31,500 each in state and local matching funds, bringing that proposed package to $630,000. Another $645,195 appears separately as “Additional Funding.”[4]
The $11,025 city share highlighted in the approval request is the city’s portion of the listed $31,500 local match—not funding for that separate $645,195 line. The airport department says it will apply for additional Mississippi Department of Transportation grants.[4]
The proposal calls for a 65-by-100-foot metal hangar. Its project narrative cites substantial demand for corporate hangar space and identifies light corporate turbojets and turboprops as the aircraft it aims to accommodate.[4]
The federal paperwork is marked “Preapplication,” with a proposed project period of Sept. 1, 2027, through Aug. 31, 2029. The records reviewed establish local approval to pursue the grant, but do not establish a federal award or that the additional financing has been secured.[4]
