Local brief
Federal grant request would cover less than half of proposed airport hangar
The $1.28 million plan lists $645,195 in additional funding beyond its proposed federal, state and local package. Airport staff says it will seek more state grants.
A proposed corporate hangar at George M. Bryan Field carries a $1,275,195 preliminary price tag—more than twice the $567,000 federal grant request placed before Starkville aldermen on Oct. 20.[1]
The engineer’s estimate lists $31,500 each in state and local matching funds, bringing that proposed funding package to $630,000. It separately lists another $645,195 as “Additional Funding.” The airport department’s coversheet says it will apply for additional Mississippi Department of Transportation grants; the project narrative likewise says more funding will be sought.[1]
The $11,025 city share highlighted in the approval request is therefore only part of the financing picture. The coversheet identifies it as the city portion of the listed $31,500 local match—not as funding for the separate $645,195 line.[1]
The proposal calls for a 65-by-100-foot metal hangar. Its justification cites substantial demand for corporate hangar space at the Starkville, Mississippi, airport and identifies light corporate turbojets and turboprops as the target aircraft. Those demand and economic-benefit claims are the project’s stated rationale, not independently measured findings.[1]
The federal paperwork is a pre-application, with a proposed project period of Sept. 1, 2027, through Aug. 31, 2029. The Oct. 20 packet requested board approval to pursue the grant; the materials reviewed do not establish whether aldermen approved that request or whether federal funding has been awarded.[1]
