Two 911 retiree rehires put on hold for more review

A committee voted 5–0 to hold each proposal. Both would cap pay at $55,008 for extra-help work without benefits.

Atlanta’s Public Safety and Legal Administration Committee put the proposed rehires of E-911 retirees Debra Powell and Rotunda Tyson on hold October 26, voting 5–0 on each request rather than approving them.[1]

The votes supply the outcome missing from our earlier report on the two dispatcher proposals. Powell worked for the city for 37 years and Tyson for 36—a combined 73 years, according to the resolutions, which identify their assignments as E-911.[1]

Each proposal would authorize a Communications Dispatcher I position in an extra-help capacity without benefits, with a salary ceiling of $55,008—$110,016 combined. The resolutions do not label those limits as annual salaries.[1]

The proposals invoke a city-charter provision they describe as allowing retiree re-employment to draw on a particular skill, for no more than 520 business days across one or more periods. That is a ceiling, not a promised appointment length.[1]

The recorded reason for both holds is “additional information and further review.” The resolution entries do not specify what additional information members requested. The votes were deferrals, not denials—and neither was an approval to rehire.[1]
