Atlanta lists Oct. 14 review for Masjid annexation and school-boundary expansion

The held proposal concerns properties in unincorporated DeKalb. The committee listing is a checkpoint, not a promised vote or an approved boundary change.

A proposal to bring properties owned by or connected to the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam into Atlanta also calls for expanding the city’s school-system boundaries. City records list the next Finance/Executive Committee checkpoint for Oct. 14 at 1:30 p.m., with the annexation still on hold.[1]

City Council returned ordinance 26-O-1348 to the committee as held, without objection, on Oct. 5, according to draft action minutes. That action did not approve bringing the properties into Atlanta.[1]

Sponsored by Councilmember Liliana Bakhtiari, the proposal responds to an annexation petition from resident electors and property owners in unincorporated DeKalb County. It uses the “100% method”; the draft ordinance says the petitioners hold title to all privately owned land within the proposed annexation area.[1]

The draft describes city business, single-family residential and office-institutional zoning classifications as consistent with the properties’ existing DeKalb designations. Those city classifications would take effect only once both zoning approval and annexation are effective.[1]

The minutes identify a May 27 hold at the committee’s request but do not explain the reason. The exact parcel boundaries and acreage are not established by the ordinance pages reviewed.[1]

For now, the proposal remains a potential change in municipal and school jurisdiction—not an approved boundary change. Oct. 14 is a listed review checkpoint, not an assurance that the committee will vote.[1]
