A $582,102 police grant clears Council—but most is for other governments
The 10–0 vote approves the federal award’s addition to Atlanta’s 2027 grant budget. APD’s share is $281,680 for equipment and programs.
The Atlanta City Council voted 10–0 Nov. 2 to add a $582,102 U.S. Justice Department grant to the police department’s 2027 grant-fund budget. Atlanta police’s share is $281,680; the rest is allocated to Fulton County and seven other cities.[1][2]
The vote on ordinance 26-O-1577 advances the measure beyond the committee recommendation we reported Oct. 27. Council’s draft action minutes record adoption by consent, following the Public Safety & Legal Administration Committee’s 5–0 favorable recommendation.[1][2]
The full award passes through Atlanta because APD applied on the participating governments’ behalf. The ordinance provides for the department to receive the joint award and reimburse the other governments—not retain the full $582,102 for its own spending. The funding comes from the 2025 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program.[2]
Atlanta’s portion is designated for equipment and programs intended to improve officer safety, advance community policing and strengthen crime prevention, response and investigations, according to the ordinance.[2]
The regional allocations include up to $93,894 for Fulton County and up to $84,253 for South Fulton. Alpharetta, College Park, East Point, Roswell, Sandy Springs and Union City also have shares in the award.[2]
