A $582,102 police grant—but Atlanta would keep less than half

A committee backed the budget amendment 5–0. APD would retain $281,680 for equipment and programs, with the rest allocated to Fulton County and seven other cities.

Atlanta police would retain $281,680 of a $582,102 federal grant under a budget amendment that won a favorable committee recommendation Oct. 26. The rest is allocated to Fulton County and seven other cities—not additional spending for APD.[1][2]

The Public Safety & Legal Administration Committee voted 5–0 for ordinance 26-O-1577, according to draft minutes. The measure would add the full award to the police department's 2027 intergovernmental grant-fund budget. That is a recommendation, not final City Council approval: the legislation's workflow lists Council consideration as pending Nov. 2.[1][2]

The full amount would pass through Atlanta because APD applied on the participating governments' behalf and would administer the joint award. The money comes from the U.S. Department of Justice's 2025 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program.[2]

Atlanta's share would support equipment and programs intended to improve officer safety, advance community policing and strengthen crime prevention, response and investigations, the ordinance says.[2]

The regional allocations include up to $93,894 for Fulton County and up to $84,253 for South Fulton. Alpharetta, College Park, East Point, Roswell, Sandy Springs and Union City also have shares in the award.[2]
