‘We have nowhere to go’: A Wood Street safety plea returns to City Hall
After warning that sidewalks end along the street, Alvin Turner asked aldermen to discuss space off the roadway near a dumpster.
People near the Wood Street dumpster need somewhere to stand out of traffic, Alvin Turner told Starkville's mayor and aldermen on Oct. 20. His request: talk with landowners about making room off the roadway.[1][2][3][4]
“We have nowhere to go,” Turner said. He described people being in the road as vehicles turn off Louisville Street and asked for “a little space” so they would not have to remain in the roadway.[1][2]
It was a second warning about walking on Wood Street. Minutes of the Oct. 6 meeting record Turner saying that sidewalks extend only partway along the street before ending, making walking unsafe.[5]
No agreement, funding or timetable was announced during the exchange before officials moved on to public hearings. Whether officials have pursued a solution outside that exchange is not established by these records.[2][6]
