Powers Ferry driveway variance marked approved after staff urged denial

The city register records an appeals-board approval at 5395 Powers Ferry Road. Staff had favored one entrance; the board’s conditions remain unverified.

Sandy Springs’ official land-use register lists Board of Appeals approval for the driveway variance at 5395 Powers Ferry Road, where city staff had recommended denying a request for access to both Powers Ferry Road and North Powers Ferry Road.[1][2]

The request, V-26-61, would retain the western entrance on Powers Ferry Road while restoring an eastern connection to North Powers Ferry Road. It seeks an exception to the city’s access rule, which bars private driveway connections to a collector street when a lot has access to another frontage.[2]

As we reported in our November 3 account of staff’s recommendation, reviewers favored using North Powers Ferry Road alone and closing the Powers Ferry Road entrance. Public Works’ assessment was blunt: “These conditions support eliminating, not retaining, the Powers Ferry Road driveway access.”[2]

The applicant reported two near-collisions at the western entrance, citing limited visibility, the road’s curve and a steep driveway grade. The proposal included automated gates to discourage cut-through traffic, but staff said gates would not address the potential traffic conflicts at that entrance.[2]

The register lists the November 4, 2026, Board of Appeals meeting, but does not supply a vote tally, reasoning or approval conditions. Its general case-status field still says “Staff Review.” Whether the board approved both entrances exactly as requested remains unverified.[1][2]
