Johnson Ferry–Peachtree Dunwoody gets an $882,090 design award

Council approved Kimley-Horn’s design work for an intersection a 2021 study flagged for crashes. This is not a construction award.

Sandy Springs, Georgia, has approved an $882,090 design-services contract award to Kimley-Horn and Associates for Johnson Ferry Road at Peachtree Dunwoody Road. The Oct. 20 council action advances work intended to take the intersection through final design and preparation for construction—not a construction-contract award.[1][2]

Unlike the staff recommendation described in our earlier report on the proposed award, the signed resolution establishes council approval. It authorizes the city manager to execute the contract pending approval by the city attorney and chief financial officer; it does not establish that the contract has been executed.[1][2]

The safety case reaches back to 2021. According to Public Works staff, the city’s Medical District Roadway Safety Analysis identified this intersection as the highest-volume and highest-crash location within its study area. That area lies near the I-285–Ga. 400 interchange and includes three major hospitals and supporting medical offices.[2]

Kimley-Horn was the highest-scoring firm, but not the cheapest. Its 89.3-point proposal cost $10,655 more than RK&K’s $871,435 offer, which scored 85 points. Staff says it reviewed Kimley-Horn’s labor hours and rates and found the fee closely aligned with the city’s independent cost estimate.[2]

The work builds on a concept completed in November 2025 through a scoping study funded by the 2021 transportation sales tax. Staff says adequate design funding is available within the existing TSPLOST project. The award materials do not establish the detailed intersection layout or a construction start date.[1][2]
