An $882,090 design proposal targets Johnson Ferry–Peachtree Dunwoody
A 2021 study identified the intersection as the Medical District study area's highest-crash location. Council considers the final-design contract Oct. 20.
Explore the source documentsSandy Springs staff wants to move Johnson Ferry Road at Peachtree Dunwoody Road into final design with an $882,090 contract. The reason for targeting this intersection goes beyond traffic backups: according to staff, a 2021 Medical District safety analysis identified it as both the highest-volume and highest-crash location in the study area.[1]
City Council is scheduled to consider awarding the work to Kimley-Horn and Associates on Oct. 20. The contract would build on a concept completed in November 2025 through a scoping study funded by the 2021 transportation sales tax, advancing the project through final design and preparation for construction. It is not a construction-contract award.[1][2]
Kimley-Horn earned the highest evaluation score among the three firms, but did not offer the lowest price. Its 89.3-point proposal cost $10,655 more than RK&K's $871,435 offer, which scored 85 points. Staff says it reviewed Kimley-Horn's labor hours and rates and found the fee closely aligned with the city's independent cost estimate.[1]
Staff says adequate money for the design work is available within the existing TSPLOST project. The award materials do not detail the eventual intersection layout or provide a construction start date; the city's separate construction project board describes safety and operational improvements but shows an aerial photograph rather than a proposed layout.[1][3]
The council meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, in the Studio Theatre at City Hall, 1 Galambos Way. The contract remains a staff recommendation awaiting council consideration.[1][2]
