Local brief
Chaseland basement-roof variance is denied, city register says
The cover reaches about five feet into a setback that permits three. Staff had recommended denial despite finding no harm to neighbors.
Sandy Springs’ land-use register records a denial of the setback variance sought to keep a roof over a basement well at 115 Chaseland Road.[1][2][3]
The roof reaches approximately five feet into a required 10-foot side setback. City rules permit roof overhangs to extend only three feet into that space, according to the staff report.[2]
In his application letter, Mark Weber said the cover was intended to prevent future water problems by keeping leaves and debris from clogging the well’s drains.[2]
As we reported in our preview of the denial recommendation, planners found the roof would not harm neighboring properties. But staff said the cover was not structurally essential and the roofed well could have been placed elsewhere without a variance.[2][4]
Case V-26-60 was on the Board of Appeals’ November 4 agenda. The register’s decision field says “Denied,” while its general case-status field still reads “Staff Review.” The entry does not explain the board’s reasoning, provide a vote tally or state a deadline to alter or remove the roof.[1][3]
