Alpharetta staff proposes hardship exceptions to residential vehicle-parking rules

The recommendation would also exempt agriculturally zoned residential properties from specified vehicle restrictions; council review is listed for Oct. 26.

Alpharetta staff recommends changing residential vehicle-parking rules to let City Council consider hardship variances. The proposed route would cover parking and storage of business vehicles, recreational vehicles and vehicles with a carrying capacity greater than 1½ tons.[1][2]

The draft says variances would be for hardship or unusual circumstances, not merely an advantage or convenience. Staff recommends considering neighbor support, exceptional conditions, economic hardship and whether an exception would substantially harm the public good.[2]

Staff also proposes excluding agriculturally zoned residential properties from regulations pertaining to business and recreational vehicles with carrying capacity above 1½ tons. The PH-26-04 staff report lists City Council consideration for Oct. 26, 2026; it presents proposed amendments rather than a council approval.[2]
