Books and coffee in a century-old office? Fulton weighs $50,000 to help
Subtext Bookstore would convert a Marietta Street condo into a bookstore, literary café and gathering space. Commissioners are scheduled to consider the county’s funding share Nov. 4.
A historic downtown Atlanta office could get a new life selling books and serving coffee. Fulton County commissioners are scheduled Nov. 4 to consider a $50,000 contribution toward Subtext Bookstore, a planned independent bookstore, literary café and community gathering space.[1][2][3]
The venture, led by local resident Cristina Logg, would convert a 2,382-square-foot office condo in the Pioneer Neon Lofts, which dates to about 1915. The site is at 342 Marietta Street NW, Unit 1.[1]
The county’s proposed contribution is one piece of a $1.955 million project budget—not the entire public grant. The draft resolution lists a $200,000 Westside Tax Allocation District Resurgens Fund grant, including Fulton’s $50,000 share, alongside a $1.43 million SBA loan and $325,000 in owner equity.[3]
Turning the office into a public-facing shop involves more than installing bookshelves. The project fact sheet says the split-level layout needs substantial accessibility and occupancy-code work, including a glass-enclosed wheelchair lift serving three levels and an accessible restroom on each level.[1]
The draft resolution says the Westside Downtown TAD Advisory Committee unanimously endorsed the project. That is distinct from the county consent now being requested: the resolution says projects financed after Dec. 31, 2018, using Fulton’s property-tax increment within the district require county approval. Commissioner Dana Barrett is sponsoring the proposal.[2][3]
The fact sheet projects eight full-time jobs eligible for benefits, including health insurance, and seven part-time jobs, in addition to Logg’s full-time work. It estimates four months of construction and completion in spring 2027; that is a project estimate, not a confirmed opening date.[1]
The Nov. 4 commission meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Assembly Hall at the Fulton County Government Center, 141 Pryor Street SW.[2]
