Downtown’s cultural-district bid wins council support

Fort Mill’s Sept. 28 vote supports seeking state recognition and potential grants. The Arts Council of York County would manage the proposed district.

Downtown Fort Mill’s push for state cultural-district status has Town Council’s backing. Council unanimously approved Resolution 2026-41 on Sept. 28, supporting an effort to seek designation through the South Carolina Arts Commission.[1]

The potential payoff goes beyond a title. Assistant Town Manager Chris Pettit told council that designation would open opportunities for grant funding, technical assistance, marketing and downtown promotion, according to the meeting minutes.[1]

The resolution identifies the Arts Council of York County as the partner organization that would manage the proposed district and says the arts council has voted to support designation.[2]

The distinction matters: council approved support for seeking recognition, not a state designation. The reviewed resolution and minutes do not establish that the Arts Commission has awarded that status or that any grant money has been awarded.[1][2]
