Budget passes with select baseball team removed

Fort Mill’s Sept. 28 vote amended a proposal totaling $74.7 million. The minutes do not explain the financial effect of removing the team.

Fort Mill Town Council approved its fiscal 2026–27 budget on Sept. 28 with an explicit change: removal of the “select baseball team.” The motion passed at second reading, according to the meeting minutes.[1]

The ordinance presented for the vote called for a $74,697,800 budget and an 87-mill property-tax levy for the fiscal year running Oct. 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2027. Those are the pre-vote figures; the minutes’ budget entry does not give a revised total or identify the team’s cost, so it does not establish how much the removal changes spending.[1][2]

The vote record also contains a contradiction. The motion summary calls approval unanimous, but the named vote lists five members in favor—Ben Hudgins, Lisa Cook, Ronnie Helms, Chris Moody and Chris Wolfe—and Mayor Guynn Savage against. The next page confirms that the motion carried. The budget entry gives no reason for Savage’s opposition.[1]

For residents seeking the spending breakdown, the ordinance points to a budget copy on file in the town clerk’s office and says it is available for public inspection.[2]
