Council clears $110,000 Best Buy grant plan for youth tech careers

The 10–0 vote advances funding for summer youth employment and waives advance approval of the grant application. It does not confirm the money has arrived.

Atlanta’s City Council voted 10–0 on Nov. 2 to approve applying for and accepting up to $110,000 from the Best Buy Foundation to expand the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program, according to draft action minutes.[1][2]

The plan, which received the committee backing we reported earlier, focuses on preparing young people for technology careers and technology-enabled jobs across Atlanta’s major industries. Ordinance 26-O-1587 also authorizes adding the grant funding to the fiscal 2027 budget.[1][2]

Council also approved waiving the city rule requiring its permission before applying for the grant. The legislation says the Department of Labor and Employment Services could not obtain advance approval because the application deadline was approaching soon after it learned of the opportunity.[1][2]

The vote is not confirmation that Atlanta has received the money. The ordinance requires grant documents to receive legal approval, be signed by the mayor or a designee, be attested by the municipal clerk and be delivered to the foundation before becoming binding. The records reviewed do not establish that those steps are complete or that funds have arrived.[1][2]
