Council authorizes $1.07 million city share for MLK–West Lake roundabout and sidewalks

The 10–0 vote authorizes a city–GDOT agreement, not a construction start. GDOT’s schedule lists completion in 2031.

Atlanta City Council voted 10–0 on November 2 to authorize a city–state agreement for improvements at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and West Lake Avenue. The project pairs a planned roundabout with sidewalk installation along West Lake Avenue SW between MLK and Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard.[1][2][3]

Resolution 26-R-4324 caps Atlanta’s contribution at $1,065,385 from its 2022 TSPLOST capital project fund. That is the authorized city share—not the total price of Georgia DOT’s project.[1][2]

The plan we previewed before the council vote calls for a single-lane roundabout with bypass lanes on the southbound and eastbound approaches. GDOT cites elevated crash severity at the intersection as its safety rationale. For people walking, it proposes rectangular rapid-flashing beacons at crossings, upgraded sidewalks and accessibility improvements where required.[3]

The vote is not a construction-start announcement. GDOT’s published schedule lists right-of-way work for spring 2028, construction bidding for fall 2029 and completion in 2031. Those are schedule targets, not guarantees.[1][3]

Council approval also does not, by itself, make the agreement binding. The resolution requires approval of its form by the city attorney, the mayor’s signature, attestation by the municipal clerk and delivery to GDOT. The records reviewed do not establish that those steps are complete.[1][2]
