The Whiskey Project’s rooftop plan wins approval—with an 11 p.m. cutoff

Alpharetta’s Sept. 14 zoning vote allows enclosed rooftop dining on North Main Street. Unenclosed rooftop areas cannot have outdoor speakers or live music.

The Whiskey Project’s planned rooftop restaurant at 116/126 North Main Street won Alpharetta City Council approval Sept. 14, with an 11 p.m. closing limit and no outdoor speakers or live music in unenclosed rooftop areas. The vote was 7–0.[1]

The application described a full-service restaurant and whiskey bar, formerly on Oak Street in downtown Roswell, taking part of the third floor and the rooftop of the building nearest North Main Street. Plans include 2,407 square feet of enclosed rooftop space and an approximately 800-square-foot uncovered dining area beside North Main.[1]

Four stories does not mean a taller building in this case. Enclosing occupiable rooftop space counts as a fourth floor, but staff told council the building’s physical height would not change. The approved limit is four stories and 60 feet. Staff said the rear building would remain three stories, with its rooftop reserved for amenities for office and residential users.[1]

At the Aug. 12 community zoning information meeting, supporters liked the restaurant concept if hours were reasonable and noise was controlled; opponents raised building-height and rooftop fall-safety concerns, according to the minutes.[1]

The city’s parking analysis listed 139 spaces for the development, compared with 114 required under the restaurant proposal—a projected surplus of 25 spaces.[1]

The approval also requires all vehicle access and truck deliveries to use the North Main Street driveway, barring them from Lily Garden Place and Violet Garden Walk.[1]

This was a zoning decision, not an opening announcement. The minutes do not give an opening date or establish whether the restaurant is operating.[1]
