A $1.3 million plan for 531 trees—and the work to keep them alive

Council will consider planting on Webb Bridge Road and North Main Street Nov. 9. The package includes two years of watering; staff says Webb Bridge utility relocations remain unfinished.

Alpharetta could add 531 roadside trees under a contract of up to $1,296,535.09 scheduled for City Council consideration Nov. 9. Public Works recommends awarding the work to Russell Landscape for Webb Bridge Road Phase 2B and State Route 9/North Main Street.[1][2]

The proposal puts 271 trees on Webb Bridge Road between the Greenway and Webb Bridge Way, at a cost of $637,777.27. Another 260 would go along North Main from Cumming Street north to Windward Parkway, for $658,757.82.[2]

There is a complication on Webb Bridge: Public Works says not all utilities have been relocated. The department says it notified Georgia Power and other utility vendors earlier this year of its planting plans. It will monitor relocation work, document any damage to new plantings or city infrastructure, and coordinate replacements or repairs with the appropriate vendors.[2]

The price buys more than trees. Both corridors would receive root barriers, with the Webb Bridge report specifically describing protection for concrete sidewalks and curbs. The package also includes watering during the first two years, and city specifications require a two-year warranty for every tree. Planned species include varieties of oak, magnolia, bald cypress and holly.[2]

Staff obtained the proposals through the city’s existing on-call landscape installation contract with Russell. Public Works says it reviewed pricing against current market conditions and fiscal 2026 landscaping project costs and found it competitive.[2]

If approved, the planting schedule runs from November through February, with installation anticipated to finish by Feb. 28, 2027. Shrubs are not included: Public Works expects a separate cost proposal in early 2027. Staff says winter planting gives trees a better survival rate, while shrubs fare better near or after the area’s last anticipated frost.[2]

The proposed award is on the Nov. 9 council agenda. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 2 Park Plaza.[1]
