A Starbucks-free City Council? Boycott proposal reaches Monday’s consent agenda
The measure advances after a 6–0 committee recommendation. Its purchasing pledge covers council-funded official events, not all city spending.
Atlanta City Council could pledge to stop buying Starbucks products for its official events under a boycott resolution on Monday’s consent agenda. The Oct. 19 meeting begins at 1 p.m.; full-council action remains pending.[1]
The Community Development/Human Services Committee voted 6–0 on Oct. 13 to recommend resolution 26-R-4188 favorably as amended. That was a recommendation—not adoption of the boycott endorsement or purchasing pledge.[1]
The key distinction is who is being asked and whose money is covered. Residents and neighboring local councils would be encouraged to refrain from buying Starbucks products. The council’s own pledge is firmer: no Starbucks purchases with council funds for meetings, conferences or other official events. That purchasing clause does not cover every city department.[1]
The proposed boycott would continue until Starbucks and Workers United-SEIU reach and ratify a contract addressing workers’ stated demands for fair wages, adequate staffing, sufficient hours, workplace protections and respect on the job.[1]
Its consent-agenda placement means the resolution is grouped with other unanimously recommended measures for a single motion to adopt. Under the agenda’s rules, an item requiring discussion is removed for consideration during the relevant committee report. Monday’s listing therefore puts the proposal before the full council, but does not guarantee passage or a separate debate.[1]
