Local brief

Before you burn that yard pile, call Fire Station 51

Chattahoochee Hills’ seasonal notice requires daily approval, limits pile size and says every ember must be out before dark.

An open burning season is not an open invitation to light a pile. Chattahoochee Hills’ Oct. 9 city update says residents must contact Fire Station 51 each day for approval of a daily permit before burning vegetative debris.[1]

The city’s notice lists Oct. 1 through April 30 as the allowed season—but weather conditions can still prohibit burning. Those seasonal dates are not a go-ahead for a particular day. Call 770-463-8177 for daily approval.[1][2]

The notice, which cites the city’s open-burning ordinance #17-06-169, allows only vegetative debris. Household trash, construction materials, tires, plastics, wiring and petroleum distillates are not permitted.[1]

Keep it to one pile at a time, no larger than 10 feet by 10 feet by 10 feet. Limit the debris to what can be fully burned before dark, and fully extinguish the fire and every ember.[1]

An adult must attend the fire with a ready water supply, grading equipment or both for rapid extinguishment.[1]
