The ordinance would waive several naming-review steps; the proposed name recognizes a historically Black Edgewood community.

An Atlanta ordinance proposes renaming Walker Park, which it describes as Edgewood’s only official city park, to Rose Hill Park. It says the name would recognize Rose Hill, a Black working-class community whose residents were displaced after a 1942 slum-clearance ordinance. Organized Neighbors of Edgewood voted in support of the name change in June, according to the proposal.

The measure would waive requirements concerning a hearing and advertisement, Urban Design Commission review, and placement on the affected neighborhood planning unit’s agenda. City Council referred it to committee Sept. 21; its Sept. 29 committee listing does not establish that the park has been renamed. The ordinance says the name change would take effect upon adoption and approval.
