Lakewood Heights’ commercial-district rethink wins committee backing
The proposal seeks up to $200,000 for a planning study—not construction. Full council consideration is listed for Nov. 2.
A proposal to seek up to $200,000 for a fresh study of Lakewood Heights’ commercial district won unanimous backing from Atlanta’s Community Development/Human Services Committee on Oct. 27.[1]
The draft minutes record a favorable recommendation on Resolution 26-R-4280, sponsored by Councilmember Jason H. Winston. The committee vote is not final city authorization or a grant award from the Atlanta Regional Commission. The packet lists full council consideration as pending for Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.[1]
As we explained in our preview of the grant proposal, the proposed 2027 study would add marketing and housing analyses to earlier planning work. The resolution says it would respond to changes in growth, development and market conditions, with the goal of a vibrant neighborhood-centered commercial district that emphasizes safety, connectivity and development accommodating multiple modes of travel.[1]
The earlier Lakewood study, completed in 2013, recommended infill development, public improvements and renovation of historic buildings. According to the resolution, Atlanta re-adopted that plan in June 2025 to reactivate it.[1]
The proposed grant would fund planning, not construction. The resolution says a required 20% match has been secured, but does not identify the matching funds’ source or dollar amount.[1]
The resolution lists Feb. 26, 2027, as the final application deadline. Its language would authorize and ratify submission, but the reviewed records do not establish whether Atlanta has already submitted the application or received an award.[1]
