Local brief
A Dec. 2 Rotary parade pitch drew support—and a mayor’s objection
The proposal would pass near Wills Park and along Roswell Street. September council minutes record differing views, not approval or a confirmed event.
A winter parade proposed for Dec. 2 near Wills Park and down Roswell Street drew enthusiasm from several Alpharetta council members—but Mayor Gilvin said he could not support an event that was not a city event.[1]
The exchange occurred at City Council’s Sept. 14 meeting. The proposal concerned a parade sponsored by the Alpharetta Rotary Club; Mayor Pro Tem Merkel and Council Member Hipes requested the discussion, and city staff sought direction on permitting.[1][2]
Merkel favored trying to hold the parade this year. Hipes said it could contribute to “small town Alpharetta” and support downtown commerce, while Council Member Brady said it would be great for the community.[1]
Council Member Reeves questioned possible conflicts with other city events on the proposed date and expressed reservations. Gilvin cited the history of the Old Soldier’s Day Parade in explaining his hesitation, alongside his objection to backing a non-city event. The minutes do not explain that historical concern or identify a specific scheduling conflict.[1]
This was a proposal discussion, not a confirmed event announcement. The September staff report and minutes record neither parade approval nor an issued permit. The reviewed records do not establish whether a permit was later issued or whether the event will go ahead; Dec. 2 and the described route are not a confirmed public schedule.[1][2]
